What Really Matters in Business

Written by Jacob Salem

What really matters to you in business?

Is it your bottom line? As a numbers guy, I’m tempted to agree with you.

In fact, I’ve been guilty of looking too much at the bottom line and forgetting about what makes the bottom line grow.

Not so long ago, I had a stable of clients. My bottom line reflected that.

But I was busy.

In fact, I was too busy to focus on my own business growth.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of businesses employing less than 250 employees is declining.

No wonder.

Most of the entrepreneurs I know are either on fire or sound asleep.

Can’t say I blame them.

It’s hard to be a small business in the United States, and even harder to narrow it down to what you’re supposed to be doing as that business.

You can’t be all things to all people.

I know that’s stating the obvious, but it bears saying again: You can’t be all things to all people.

I have had to really look at my why.

Which brings me back to what really matters:

Focus.

In my own business, I’ve had to look at what I want to accomplish and how I can do that. It’s a winding road, in some cases, but it’s also incredibly freeing.

How can you find YOUR focus?

1. Name the problem you’re solving.

What problem are you solving for your customer? How are you helping?

Now give it a name. It doesn’t have to be a catchy name, but it does have to be something you understand, something that you can clearly explain to other people (especially your associates and employees!).

2. Plan your approach.

Yes, planning is part of every entrepreneur’s life, and it has to be done while you’re in the midst of the busy and crazy that is business.

How will you present your solution? How will you reach the right people? How will you grow?

There’s a lot to planning, but you also have to execute. Don’t let planning keep you from diving in…but don’t dive in without an idea of how deep the water is.

3. Zero in.

There’s a reason Facebook ads work so well: they let you identify the people who want to buy what you’re offering.

Not only that, but they let you measure and adjust so that you get higher conversions and thus more sales.

(If you want to learn more about Facebook ads, be sure to check out our courses, where we’ll teach you the best ways to reach the most people who are right for you.)

When you’re zeroing in, you’re reaching the right people.

Because let’s face it, there are people who are not right for you. They don’t need your product or service or they’re not a fit.

Focus in and see where it takes you!
